Music & Literature.



World literature beautifully enacted & carefully nuanced by master actor Ralf Grobel, in dialogue with Piper’s solo prowess conjuring the atmospheric essence of their narrative locations. Duo Zephyr has built a highly enthusiastic following with its creative re-interpretations since 2011.


Piper highlights subtle literary portrayals with soundscapes influenced by the musical traditions of Zephyr's chronicled tales; her improvisation taking flight, rendering charismatic sonic descriptions for their listeners’ ears.



Formation.



Duo Zephyr is a varied duo programme developed in co-operation with master actor Ralf Grobel in Germany, featuring the musical creativity of Maryanne Piper, coupled with the nuanced voice of either Ralf Grobel (Schauspielbühnen Stuttgart/Berlin). Cello or accordeon can be added for specific programmes, allowing wider musical scope in a trio formation.



Events / Venues.



Zephyr's programme continually expands and is open to suggestions from event organisers. Literature events, festivals, concert programmes and international cultural evenings have all feaured in Zephyr's peformance schedule. Previous examples of event specific programmes include: Le Feu - Das Feuer - The Fire: A literary collage in commemoration of World War One (A European Perspective), commissioned by Bergische VHS and Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf (2014).

Behind the Scenes



Ralf Grobel



Grobel is best known for his many collaborations with theatres such as Landestheater Tübingen, Stadttheater Augsburg, Staatstheater Mainz, Theater Basel, the Wuppertaler Bühnen and the Schauspielbühnen in Stuttgart. Further engagements have produced film & television work with directors such as Klaus Emmerich, Joseph Rusnak and Vivian Naefe. A native of Wuppertal, Grobel studied theatre at the Folkwang Hochschule, Essen.



Maryanne Piper



Australian musician Maryanne Piper provides the subtle musical portrayals of Zephyr's chronicled tales. A musician of well-honed theatrical sensibilities, Piper expands her creative sound world in this setting with Looping, Clarinets, Saxophones, Irish/Nordic/ Asian Whistles, Duduk, Pipes, as well as Kalimba, Sansula and other musical discoveries collected from her travels.
